As is probably well-known, Adobe has stopped updating Acrobat Pro 9 when it reached version 9.5.5, and this was quite some time ago.
No matter that many people paid for it. We just can't update anymore.
Moreover, updating from a fresh reinstall of Pro 9.0 to 9.5.5 is currently very tedious.
I will be talking about the Windows version here, but the situation is probably similar for Mac OS.
Basically, after reinstalling Pro 9.0 from the disk one purchased, one needs to download and reinstall, one by one, all the updates or patches (and there are many). The downloads from Adobe are very slow (more generally, not only for these patches; many people are complaining; Adobe seems not to care), and after most of the patches, restart is required.
First, quite a bit of search is required to learn that the patches can be downloaded from
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/9.x/
I have done that; it takes hours.
Then, installing the updates takes many hours more.
So, to save many people some time and frustration, I made this blog about the patching procedure. I also uploaded the archive with all the patches (I found necessary) on a, hopefully, much faster site.
Note that the approach suggested here is still time consuming and perhaps frustrating, but it's all I could do.

Once you have downloaded the patches archive (Acrobat_Pro_9_Patches.zip), you can reinstall them, one by one (unfortunately), as described below.
You can also try the procedure described by Adobe at
https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/update-patch-acrobat-reader-7.html
but, for me, it didn't work exactly as described there.
Instead, these are the steps and patches that worked for me:
1. Once you have installed Acrobat Pro 9.0 from your original disk, and unpacked the patches archive, please run the first patch:
AcroProStdUpd910_T1T2_incr.msp
2. Afterwards, please apply serially the patches from
AcrobatUpd911_all_incr.msp
through
AcrobatUpd9xx_all_incr.msp
to
AcrobatUpd955_all_incr.msp
in the order of their name.
Note that the patching will only work in this order. Try to keep track, but do not worry too much if you can't, because the installer will give you an error message if you are trying to install the wrong patch (i.e., out of order). You can start Acrobat and check the version if you lose track (which is easy, as there are so many).
Finally, if someone from Adobe ends up here:
1. The files made available for download here have been downloaded legally, from the Adobe website, and made available here as a pack, only to save people some of the time your company force us to waste.
2. Please ask your company to pack all these patches into a single one and make it available for fast download.
